Team Description

ELBFLORACE is a group of students enrolled at Dresden university of technology. We came together under this name for the first time in July of 2006! Our team is coined after Elbflorence, our hometown’s namesake, which titles Dresden Florence on the river Elbe.

Right now ELBFLORACE’s students major in Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, Technical Design, and Business/Economics. We are actively recruiting students from other areas to broaden our spectrum as we move forward into the conceptual and constructive phase of our venture. Since 2017 we are taking part at the DV- class and we are looking forward to escapades of interdisciplinary, hands-on learning and of course to showing its results in the Formula Student competition in 2025!

ZoE is ELBFLORACE's 17th car and the 5th that can drive autonomously. This year, we took a big step by integrating our vehicle control unit into our DV PC, which makes it easier to maintain and also makes it slightly lighter. Our Autonomous System is currently undergoing systematic testing to evaluate potential sensor reductions without compromising performance, with a long-term goal of transitioning to a camera-only pipeline. We have also switched back from hydraulic to mechanical suspension.

DaisiE is now in the 3rd generation of the hydraulically decoupled suspension. However, the biggest innovation this year is the Powerground. Further improvements have been made to the packaging of the EBS and the circuit boards. The driverless category is an essential part of our team, which is why a lot of emphasis was placed on integrating the system even better this season. For example, by improving the integration of the lidar in the aerodynamic concept.

Let us welcome Rose, the 15th race car of our Formula Student Team Elbflorace! This year the main focus is on reliability, through troubleshooting and improvements. We have also been able to make some changes to the previous concept, such as better packaging, a successful weight reduction, or a semi-active hydraulically decoupled suspension system. To make all this happen, we are very grateful to our hard-work members! The team and RosE look forward to seeing everyone else at Hockenheim in 2023!

With HerminE, our 14th car, we made a huge step in technical development. Over two years about 80 students designed a hybrid (EV/DV) racecar with a new aerodynamic package which is more agressive. At the drivetrain we switched to 10 inch CFRP rims and designed a smaller wheel package. To have a better connection between the wheel and the monocoque we decided to develop a hydraulic decoupled suspension system. We are excited to be back at the Hockenheimring!

Elbflorace Electric consists of 60 students from Dresden. In the last year we have been working on our 12th race car named LillE. The appeal of our new lady lies in a decoupled spring-damper system, a new drive concept, featuring a 3D printed upright as well as a carbon rim and air-cooled inverters. Building this race car wasn’t always easy. We had to take up several challenges like a forklift truck crashing into our production hall. We are very happy and grateful to participate at FSG 2019.

Elbflorace consists of 60 members. Although about 95% is male, we are proud to have a female Team Captain. She is responsible for coordinating the entire project and represents the team. The Chief Engineer supports the Team Captain & coordinates the technical division manager. They are, as well as the economical division manager, subordinated to the team captain. “Evolution” is playing a big role this year. The third electric race car will pay tribute to what worked well in the past and surprise with new, innovative parts and qualities. The students work covered, amongst others, the refining of the self-developed Battery Management System and improved bonding of the advanced cells by switching to a crimp connection. The maximum performance of the engine increased from 72 kW up to 100 kW. The motors and inverters are easier to maintain and we will use them by 600V to be more efficient. With our guideline “E-Star”-Education,Safety,Team,Award and Reliability-we defined our goals.

Elbflorace e.V. is the fascination of Formula Student in Dresden, Saxony. The team Elbflorace was founded in 2006. After three combustion cars we have now manufactured our second full electric Formula Student race car. For the new creation we used all information gained from last year’s vehicle and manufactured a smaller and lighter race car. The “Murph-E” consists of a two-parted CFRP-monocoque with a hatch at the rear for better maintainability. Our self-developed single-stage double spur gear is situated in the new self-constructed motor housing. Each gear connects one high-speed spindle motor with the drive shaft on the rear axle of the car. The wishbone inserts of the new vehicle are optimized to make sure that the adhesive is covering every surface which is needed. New sensory has been added and the car’s low voltage system communicates only via CAN in 2012. Our team is excited to compete with all teams at Formula Student in Germany. Info
Our dream of designing, constructing, and manufacturing a racing car started in 2006, when “Elbflorace” was founded by 18 students full of innovative ideas. After four years of being a part of the FSC, we face a new challenge that has been prepared meticulously: the change to the Formula Student Electric. Months full of fun, effort, passion, persistence, and night shifts lie behind us. Now we are proud to present “Areus”, our newest development. The main objective of it was to take the design of the last season’s car and change it to the requirements of an electrical powered racing car. All components which have been reused were analysed to reduce weight, improve the performance and reduce costs. The highlight of this year’s monocoque chassis is the aluminium back-plate, which ensures an easy maintainability. The car is powered by two strong electric motors and has an advanced low voltage system, keeping track of all different kinds of sensory. Electrifying ELBFLORACE!
