Team Description

Since the Academic Motorsports Club Zurich (AMZ) was founded in 2006 by students of ETH Zurich it has produced a prototype to compete in various Formula Student competitions in Europe every year. After having built three cars powered by combustion engines, AMZ has moved forward to developing electric racing cars since 2010. Throughout the years, we have continuously been at the top of innovation, not only developing new CFRP monocoques, complete aerodynamics packages and suspension but also designing our own motors, gearbox and controllers.

The association is financially independent and supported by numerous financial, manufacturing and parts sponsors as well as various institutes of Swiss universities ETH Zurich and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. AMZ is the first Swiss team in Formula Student. The active team counts approximately 70 people, backed by the crucial support of their alumni.

We look forward to competing with the whole Formula Student Community this summer with our 19th car nera.

Founded in 2007, the AMZ is still the "Swiss National Team" of Formula Student. Students of several universities come together to represent Switzerland. After two successful seasons in 2011 and 2012, the team improved the whole car, screw by screw. Keypoints of "julier" are a very lightweight single-piece CFRP monocoque (13kg) and four self-developed motors(AMZ M3) which are placed in each wheel. The suspension layout consists of 10inch carbon rims, a self-designed steering system and tailor made air springs. After the successful introduction of the aerodynamics in 2012, the new car features a completely new package to further improve the performance. We are looking forward to compete in FSE 2013!

As founding member of the Formula Student Electric class, the AMZ has always been aiming to compete with the front-running combustion cars. After a successful season in 2011, the only Swiss team is trying to improve the whole car, screw by screw. The key features of umbrail, the 2012 car, are a very lightweight single-piece CFRP monocoque (14kg with the aluminum front roll hoop) and the self-developed engines (AMZ M2). The whole car shrunk about five centimetres in comparison to last year's car. The new suspension layout consists of 10inch hybrid rims (carbon shells, aluminum centers), a self-designed steering system and tailor made air springs and dampers. Additionally the car is fitted with a complete aerodynamic package to improve longitudinal and lateral acceleration. Nevertheless, the car weighs about 10kg less than its predecessor. A total of 175kg. We are looking forward to competing in FSE 2012 and want to improve last year's performance!

2011
Car #33
Info
Anno domini 2007, AMZ Racing Team started in Formula Student as a newcomer with the 255 kg, 10", four-cylinder racer "albula". Subsequently, our team chose a carbon monocoque as chassis concept and 13" wheels for "maloja" (petrol), "simplon" (E85) and "furka" (our first electric car).2010 was the most successful year in our team history with an overall win in Class 1A, Formula Student Silverstone (957/1000 pts), a first place in Engineering Design at Hockenheim and a 5th place overall and 3rd in Design in Melk, Austria (against 24 IC and 4 electric cars).AMZ's latest creation "novena" is a car that uses all the experience from last year and improves the weakest points of "furka". A strong focus on lightweight construction yielded a 190 kg, 70 kW electric car with 13" carbon rims, a single-piece monocoque and two self-developed electric machines (permanent magnet synchron outrunner). Our goal for 2011 is to be as fast as the best IC cars on the track and win an event.

Info
After three successful Formula Student cars with combustion engines, the AMZ Racing Team decided in summer 2009 to concentrate on developing an electric car. By designing not only a new drivetrain, but also new chassis and suspension, our goal is to outperform the ICE cars in every dynamic discipline. furka's monocoque is an evolution of our 2009 chassis simplon, with a completely redesigned rear section. The suspension geometry was further optimized with extensive simulation of tire data, while the components' weight was reduced. The LiPo batteries are contained in composite boxes, mounted to the sides of the chassis. Safety is maintained by our selfmade battery management system and the central vehicle control unit. To achieve a high power to weight ratio, two DC motors are used. Each of them is linked to one rear wheel, which allows active torque vectoring and recuperation.
