Team Description

The Scuderia Mensa HS RheinMain e.V. is the Formula Student racing team of the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden and Rüsselsheim (Hochschule RheinMain). Although the majority of the team consists of engineering students, members from a wide range of faculties contribute to the project, resulting in a nearly constant workforce of approximately forty students.

Since 2006, the team has been participating in Formula Student events across Europe. The first car, SPR08, was a combustion-powered vehicle that competed at Hockenheim in 2008. This marked the beginning of a tradition in which a new and improved car was developed each year. From 2008 to 2010, Scuderia Mensa built combustion vehicles. For the following five years (2011–2015), the team focused on electric race cars before returning once more to combustion engines.

In 2019, the decision was made that the SPR19 would be the final combustion-powered vehicle of Scuderia Mensa, marking the definitive start of the electric era. The first all-wheel-driven electric car, SPR21evo, exceeded expectations by not only achieving rule compliance but also successfully completing its first dynamic events. With the SPR23evo, the team took the next major step by demonstrating reliability through the completion of multiple endurance events.

The team’s latest car, the SPR25e, represents the culmination of years of continuous development. It is a fully rule-compliant, reliable, and high-performance race car, achieving a major milestone by completing the acceleration event in under four seconds. This success reflects the team’s technical expertise and ongoing commitment to pushing the limits of performance and innovation.

Info
This is the 7th year we compete in Hockenheim in a row. Our goal for 2014 is to build a racecar with competitive driving dynamics and a strong motor. A big focus was set on reliability when designing every part of the racecar. The suspension of the SPR14E features a completely new design of all major parts. Our all-new telemetry allows to monitor the whole racecar in detail whenever it is needed. This is the third year in a row where a self-developed battery pack and BMS is used.

You know us! We are the team with the yellow racing cars! With the experience of the past two seasons of building electric race cars, we start into the new season. Powered by a brushless DC engine, the SPR13E features programmable and adapted power electrics. The multi-disc, self-locking, differential causes reduced revolutions per minute and an increased maximum torque up to 1100 Nm. The battery and the battery management system are both self-developed. Double wishbone suspension made of stainless steel. The dampers are actuated by pushrods. Complete re-design of uprights and wheel hubs. Tyre and rim data are better used for simulation purposes as well as final suspension setup. Increased use of carbon fiber parts. FE-analysis of entire frame. TiG-welded space frame made of E355. Weight loss of 10 kg. Better center of gravity by centering battery packs. Our first lightweight aeropack will gives us as much downforce as possible while not adding too much drag.

You have a Déjá-vu? Maybe it is because the Scuderia Mensa HS RheinMain Racing Team now participates for its fifth season at the FSG Events and grows in members and experiences every year. The mix of a rising competence in engineering design and marketing activities leads to more confidence from our supporters. After three seasons of gasoline powered cars you might remember the yellow flash from Ruesselsheim with the 65. Those days have been noisy! Since 2011 Racing became quite silent in the RheinMain area. An electric powertrain concept gave the opportunity to the students to learn today what will fulfill their future. With state of the art technique the SPR11E has been a bench to figure out how systems like those have to be engineered. This year’s SPR12E will be more than 100 kg lighter, even more reliable, comfortable and better in performance with active differential (torque vectoring) and traction control. Most of these systems are primarily self-made designed by the team.

Info
After developing three combustion cars – SPR08 to SPR10 – and successful participations in Hockenheim, Austria and Italy last year the Scuderia Mensa of HS RheinMain Racing will get part in the new electric class of Formula Student in its fifth year after foundation. The new SPR11e bases on the experiences we gained during manufacturing our combustions. Last year’s proven parts were optimized and adapted to the new requirements the electric drives has brought with it. Besides some changes e.g. on the body-kit and improvements concerning the chassis, the development of the electric tractive system and drivetrain has been mastered by a team of Designer, Electric, Economic and Mechanical Engineering Students in collaboration with our sponsors. Our goal is to build a car that has at least the same performance, reliability, safety and ergonometric qualities as the SPR10. Therefore we worked hard and will participate successfully at the Hockenheimring and in Turin (ITA) this year.
