Team Description

The University of Toronto Formula SAE Racing Team (UofT Racing) was founded in 1997, with the first car competing in 1999 (FSAE). Since then the team has enjoyed success in various competitions around the globe.

The University of Toronto presents UT12 for the 2012 Formula Student Germany competition. The past 15 years of experience have culminated into this design; focused on reliable high performance. UT12 is Toronto’s first 10” wheel vehicle featuring newly designed welded aluminum uprights and 6061-T6 hubs. 2012 is the fourth installment of the Honda TRX450 motor modified to increase volumetric efficiency by 7.5% while increasing broad range torque output over UT11. Design features include a high compression piston, reduced transmission gears and thermal coated stepped exhaust header. Focus was placed on creating a robust fuel /ignition map to ensure reliable operation during the testing and competition seasons. The UT12 chassis has evolved from the successful 2011 spaceframe. Chassis weight has been reduced to 24kg and represents Toronto’s highest stiffness to weight ratio. We look to build off our successes in 2011 and fight for the championship in Hockenheim.

UT11 marks the 13th vehicle produced by the University of Toronto since its inception in 1997. The knowledge and experience developed over the past 14 years has culminated in the design and manufacture of our 2011 vehicle. FSG2011 will mark the 4th appearance for Toronto at this event and are eager to fight for the championship.Strong focus was placed on developing the driver during the 2011 season. A STACK data acquisition unit was employed to log engine/vehicle parameters and analysis on specific driving styles were conducted. To reduce stress on the driver an electronic brake distribution controller was implemented to provide varying brake bias during trail braking vs. full braking applications.UT11 is the third season running the Honda TRX450R motor with focus on fuel efficiency and drivability. Engine compression has been raised from 12:1 to 13.5:1 and a stepped diameter exhaust header has been implemented to broaden the torque curve for a more usable power band.

The University of Toronto Formula SAE Racing Team is comprised of a dozen engineering students. In a rapidly changing FSAE series, the UT09 team was able to adapt designs to accommodate new regulations, but also delved forward with higher-level initiatives. While making accommodations for the cross-section template, the front suspension system was also redesigned to maintain simplicity, ease of adjustability and linear kinematics for tuning. A switch from the previously used F4i to a light-weight single cylinder engine is one of several efforts to improve fuel economy. UT09 also features the second iteration of a CFRP monocoque frame, expanded DAq capabilities, along with continued development with a custom externally adjustable Salisbury-type differential; and 95% of it all is built by the students. The UofT team looks forward to a challenging 2009 race season with its competitors from around the world and is prepared to defend its top Canadian ranking.

Founded in 1997, the University of Toronto Formula SAE Racing Team has developed into a strong competitor in the FSAE-Formula Student series. The team holds three Championship titles at FS UK and top ten finishes at FSAE East. The team has grown to 15 engineering students who design and fabricate over 95% of all components themselves. UofT's debut in FS Germany comes with large advancements in vehicle design including its first monocoque tub, a student-written vehicle dynamics simulation, and engine research through simulation and dynamometer validation. A thorough dynamic track testing program allows the team to tune the suspension setup and a track-adjustable differential for different events. The UofT FSAE Team is also a strong promoter of collaboration between Universities and hosts the largest student run FSAE competition - The UofT Shootout. As Canada's leading team, we are proud to represent our country to our honourable FSAE colleagues from Germany and around the world.
