Team Description

The Running Snail Racing Team was founded in 2004, supported by now student advisor
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Horst Rönnebeck. Since then the team has steadily progressed and was able to build a new race car every year. The invaluable knowledge and experience gained thereby is passed on to and expanded by each new generation. The OTH Amberg-Weiden
is a rather small university, which results in a familiar and informal atmosphere among students. This positive environment reflects in great team spirit and bonds the members together.

In our tenth year in Formula Student we have created a unique concept to further improve our car, the RS 14. Based on our centerless wheel hub, we were able to develop an electric motor which is mounted in the wheel itself, removing the need for a power transmission. This new concept also helped to reduce the part variety, since all four motors and wheel hubs are identical. To enhance the dynamic behaviour of our car, we developed our own vehicle control system and incorporated torque vectoring.

Since the foundation of the Running Snail Racing Team in 2004 the existing knowledge base has been used for the construction of the race car and is continuously being expanded. Aside our annual gain in students, the racing team is countinuously increasing the development and number of innovations. With assistance of companies we manage to move developments to the limit of performance. The enormous extra work that every member of the team achieves, overruns the dimension of effort of a normal student by far. This is how unexpected revolutions occur in automotive engineering as well as in marketing and organizational strategies. References for these are our full monocoque, our very first electric powertrain since foundation and the worldwide unique centerless wheel carrier, as well as the considerable organizational effort that is necessary to keep driving this project forth successfully.
