Team Description
Formula SAE and Formula Student teams engage students in a work environment similar to what they will encounter after graduation. These students are challenged to incorporate their classroom knowledge into effective automotive designs by designing, building, and racing a formula-style racecar every year. This produces engineers who are ready and able to make significant contributions within countless industries upon graduation. Zips Racing is one of the oldest Formula SAE teams ever, established at The University of Akron in 1989. Starting off as a group of under 10 undergraduate students building an internal combustion engine car, we have since expanded into a team of 50+ members and are now fully electric. Over 90% of our car is designed and manufactured by us, and we test and race against hundreds of universities at numerous competitions each year. This has taken us both across the nation and across the world, as we have competed stateside (Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire) and abroad (Hungary, Austria, Germany). We are the only team in the US to consistently compete overseas, and in 2023, we achieved a highlight third-place finish in Hungary. We are preparing to return to Europe with our first electric vehicle, but we first aspire to finish in the top 10 at Formula SAE Michigan this season. ZR26, our 36th car, is currently in production and will accomplish this goal. With years of knowledge, a motivated team, and expert manufacturing skills, this will be our most advanced vehicle to date.
