Team Description

In 2006, a bunch of amateur yet ambitious engineering students from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, driven by the will to break the shackles of an orthodox education system rolled up their sleeves and took to the workshop with passion in their hearts, tools in their hands and a battered auto rickshaw engine. Thus, Orion Racing India was born, a student initiative which has today become a craze among budding automobile enthusiasts and a force to be reckoned with amongst its competitors.

This year we enter the competition with the ORI'17. Equipped with a full aerodynamic package, a 650cc engine, and agile vehicle dynamics, which plants every bit of power to the ground, the ORI'17 is fully equipped to roar on the FSG track. The aim of the design, this year was to have just enough complexities in the car to execute better lap times, but to keep the car concept as simple as possible. DRS, variable brake bias system, and shift without lift were implemented successfully on the car.

Ever since its inception in 2006, the Orion Racing team has grown significantly in organisation and structure with the increasing international exposure. This year the team’s focus was to enhance car performance by opening new avenues for simplifying system design and understanding overall man-machine interaction. Adhering to this, the team opted for a single-cylinder engine and a 10-inch wheel package and thus intends to realize its goal which is to complete and compete.

Orion Racing India was kick started in 2006 by a group of ambitious engineering students from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering. They aimed to rise above the confines of a suffocating education system by arming themselves with the practical knowledge of their everyday studies. Seven years since its inception, team Orion Racing India has grown significantly in size, improved its organization & structure and gained a lot of experience through international exposure. This year the project timeline was revised in order to reduce the time spent on design & manufacturing and increase the time spent on vehicle testing. The increased focus on testing is aimed at ensuring reliability and extensive use of sensors. The ORI-13 boasts several new features such as student built live telemetry, pull rod front suspension system, ergonomic driver interface with led rpm shift lights with a performance tuned engine and the eccentric chain tensioning mechanism providing finest adjustability.

Orion Racing India is an experienced team with three previous appearances at Formula Student Germany. Our latest car, ORI10 is a result of our effort of meticulously analyzing our strengths and weaknesses. With this car our team reaches a whole new level of technical competence. It is the next cog in our master plan of first completing the competition and then moving onto techincal excellence. It features a few firsts for our team, viz. Slick tires, Carbon Fibre body work and After Market Programmable ECU. It is a completely new design with no parts being carried over from ORI2009. Also, we carry forward our self-developed electronics legacy with a Colour LCD screen on the steering wheel, a self developed data acquisition system with a GPS module electronically adjustable brake bias, telemetry and CAN.At FSG 2010 we aim to radically improve our ranking and then move steadily up the rankings in the future years.

We have a dream, to take India to the podium of International Student Formula Racing. After the calm & prudent introduction in 2007, we wish to make a loud comeback in 2008. Inspire, Innovate & Integrate are principles that bind the soul of Orion Racing India. Breaking barriers of class-room teaching, FSG has given us a taste of the real world. Juggling classes by day & project by night, we’ve extracted the maximum from limited resources. After analysis & iterations, we’ve designed mechanical systems based on simplicity, economy & ergonomics. Supported by companies like Honda, we’ve made relentless efforts to make this year’s car a reliable, light & responsive racer. We have incorporated novel designs while sticking to basic engineering principles, including in-house advanced electronic systems like Paddle Shifting & Data Acquisition.Integrating the best & eliminating the worst of 2007, we represent a stronger, more confident team, ready to forge our mark on the race track!
