Team Description

The formula student team Speeding Scientists Siegen e.V. (s3racing) was founded in early 2008 and consists of 16 students from different faculties of the University of Siegen.

In 2009 we won the FSG Best Newcomer Award. In 2010 we improved to a 22nd overall place in FSG. In 2011 we ranked 17th in our first FSE competition. We replaced 17th in FSE 2012 and scored a 4th place in FSS 2012.

In 2019 around 15 students set the goal to improve upon our first AWD, Aluminium Monocoque car. Specifically in the aerodynamic, powertrain and chassis departments. With double the downforce, 130Nm more torque and more than 5kg of weightloss in the monocoque, those targets were met.Highlights of our new car include the highly cost efficient aluminium monocoque, an innovative, chain-driven steering system without any play and a new pedalbox, that allows setting changes in less than 10s.

Founded in january 2008 we were able to win the Best Newcomer Award with our first car s3-09. Since 2011 we are participating in the Formula Student electric and with the s3-15e we build our fifth electric car. As there were many changes last year, we focused on details and redesigned almost every part carefully. Now we are looking forward to the competition, are excited to see you there and compete against each other.

With the fourth electric racecar, the s3-14e has been designed from scratch. We remained loyal to the rear-wheel drive, but we replaced everything else to optimize the over all performance. This year we developed for the first time a full monocoque, an aerodynamic kit and a brand new 10-inch suspension system. The total weight is roughly 210 kg, so we were able to deliver a 20 kg weight reduction in comparison to the former s3-13e. Now the s3-14e has to show how strong it can on the racetrack.

The Speeding Scientists Siegen built their fifth formula student race car this year. It is called the “s3-13e” and is moreover their third electric car. The start of the designing was in September 2012 and ended in January 2013. After a four month’s manufacturing and assembling phase, the car was presented to public on May, 29 2013. With a revised transmission, a shrunk accumulator package, a lighter frame and a desired total weight of 230kg the s3-13e will achieve a good performance on track and the new carbon fiber bodywork will care for an impressive appearance.

The Speeding Scientists Siegen return to the Hockenheimring with their second electric race car, the S3-12e. After the design and construction phase which started in autumn 2011 the car was presented to the public on July, 6th in Siegen. We've maintained the concept of the last year and focused on the improvement of details to bring up a robust and reliable racing car. A reduced weight of 265 kg, an increased motor power, a strengthened carbon-fiber suspension and an all-new packaging concept for the accumulator and the powertrain ensure a good overall performance of the S3-12e. With a new battery management system and a entire redesigned control system layout, the reliability in the most critical parts of the last years car have also been improved. The engine control system is based on the last year but comes along with the new Active Slip Control to ensure a powerful acceleration of the new car. The S3racing team is looking forward to a successful Formula Student Germany 2012!

After the Speeding Scientists Siegen built combustion cars in the last two years and became the Best Newcomer in 2009 and improved to an 22nd overall place last year, 2011 we're starting with our first electric race car.The concept and design phase was started in autumn 2010. After the construction phase in spring 2011 the new car was presented on July, 5th in Siegen. The main design goals of the S3-11e were to build a robust and reliable car again, while improving the weight of the mechanical components to compensate the higher weight for the entire electric drivetrain. For this reason we've also installed a carbon-fiber suspension for the first time. A self developed gearbox transfers the power of the motors to both rear wheels. As both motors are controlled independently we're using a self developed control layout which includes torque vectoring system, traction control, energy recovery and an electronic differential.
